Vinyl art for footpaths workshop

Learn to create 2D mock concepts for a footpath public art opportunity in this free, five-hour-long workshop.

Council will launch a temporary public art activation program commencing summer 2022/23, running until May 2023. As part of this program, vinyl artworks will be installed at selected sections of the foreshore footpath from Woody Point to Bongaree. Each footpath section will feature artwork by one local artist.

To ensure local artists have the skills and tools needed to submit an expression of interest, Council's Cultural Activation team is providing a free creative workshop that focuses on concept development and skills-building.

Renowned public artist and public art lecturer Simon Degroot will be leading the workshop. Simon Degroot is a Brisbane-based artist who considers how contemporary abstract painting can form a dialogue with pre-existing abstract forms. He has completed many temporary public art commissions for Brisbane City Council, Queensland Rail, Cairns Regional Council and The City of South Perth. Public art compliments his studio work and provides opportunities for expanded creativity.

 You will learn:

  • things to consider when creating artwork for the public realm, a ground plane that the public will walk over
  • how the public environment can inform your creative concepts
  • some helpful methods on how to translate your concepts from small to large scale
  • practical hands-on techniques using paper, collage, graphic markers and paint pens
  • tips on how to transfer your 2D concept to a digital file.

Council will give attendees aerial plans of footpaths to use as the foundation to build their mock concept design.

The workshop will provide attendees with paper, pens, glue, scissors, paint and markers as required. Council encourages attendees to bring their preferred design medium, such as a laptop or tablet.

There will be catering during the workshop. Attendees can mention dietary requirements when booking.

The venue is wheelchair accessible. Contact the Cultural Activation team if you have any other specific needs.

Expressions of interest for the installation of vinyl artwork as part of the public art activation program will open in September 2022.
