Councillor Peter Flannery - Mayor

Mayor

Councillor Peter Flannery

As a former Australian Army soldier and long-serving local Councillor, Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery has devoted his career to serving his country and community. Peter is known for his collaborative leadership style and is committed to being a leader for the entire region.

A keen family man, he has lived in Moreton Bay since 1994 and currently lives in Morayfield with his family.

As Mayor, Peter has led the charge to put Moreton Bay on the map as a city distinct from the others in SEQ. The plan would see a strategic deviation away from the traditional CBD model of a city, to create a network of linked business and residential areas surrounded by green space. His mission to ‘Go Green - As We Grow’ was inspired by overwhelming feedback from local residents about the importance of protecting native habitats in the face of booming population growth.

The signature policy of this initiative has been Council’s successful land buyback program, which has already protected more than 21 hectares of wildlife habitat since launching in 2020. The properties Council purchased are all located near existing green corridors within Moreton Bay to enable native wildlife to pass safely around the region and live longer lives.

The Mayor is also committed to making Council more open and transparent with the community, especially in relation to planning and development. That is why a comprehensive review of Moreton Bay’s planning scheme is underway.

Before becoming Mayor, Peter was a pivotal driver for the construction of the Burpengary Community War Memorial, which has become a special site for the greater region, as well as a place of gathering to commemorate soldiers past and present on Anzac Day, Remembrance Day and Vietnam Veterans’ Day.

During his time as a Councillor, Peter has helped Moreton Bay become one of the fastest growing council regions in Australia. He has seen the delivery of catalytic projects like the Peninsula Railway Line, The Mill PDA, and USC Moreton Bay, setting the foundations for even greater investment and prosperity. He was also heavily involved in making the state-of-the-art Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex a reality. This facility has become a hub for both local clubs, and professional sporting events (such as AFL and soccer matches).

He is passionate about technology, innovation, and medical research - and is excited to see the jobs of tomorrow being created in Moreton Bay. He’s especially excited by the potential for the Olympics and Paralympics to transform Moreton Bay. Peter is also chair of the Council of Mayor’s SEQ 2032 Legacy Group, as well as a representative on the Policy Executive of the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ).

In every decision, he believes Moreton Bay’s lifestyle, opportunities, and environment must be the most important considerations to ensure they remain for future generations and residents.
