Floodplains

Floodplains are areas that adjoin creeks, rivers or coastlines and include the footprint of all adjoining land that could experience inundation during a flood. Floodplains are a resource of immense value.

They are the sites of many towns and cities and provide the natural resources to support many of our most productive rural industries. Floodplains are also areas of primary environmental significance and their well-being is essential to the survival of many ecosystems.

The floodplain in the urban setting is used for many activities including recreation and natural areas. Floodplains represent one of the most common landforms in the Moreton Bay region covering approximately 20% or 400 square kilometres.

The broadest floodplains in the region include the coastal floodplains of the Pine River, Hays Inlet, Caboolture River and Pumicestone Passage catchments and the westward flowing Stanley River.

Current flood projects

Council is undertaking a number of detailed flood investigations that will result in high quality flood information for the Moreton Bay Regional Council area:

Disaster management

Under the Queensland Disaster Management Act 2003, local governments have the responsibility to plan and prepare for disasters, to coordinate immediate responses in their event and to coordinate recovery operations.

Flood search / enquiry

Council provides information in the form of an inundation report where available, as to the degree of inundation that may occur at a specific property. The flooding information provided does not relate to localised run-off from properties, roads or some minor tributaries of creek or river systems.

Flood mapping

Council has compiled a series of maps, available for free download showing areas of potential inundation of the ground surface during a '1 in 100 year' flood. These maps are based on flood studies prepared by Moreton Bay Regional Council and the former Caboolture, Redcliffe and Pine Rivers Shire Councils. These maps will be progressively upgraded over the coming months as new data emerges from Council's flood mapping projects.

Flood publications

Council holds a number of flood studies and investigations that provide documentation of the process by which the various floodplains in the region have been determined. These studies and investigations can be downloaded free of charge. Alternatively hard copies are held for viewing at each of Council's customer service centres where you may also purchase a copy - a charge of $105.00 includes GST per electronic copy or $157.50 includes GST per paper copy will apply.
