Set in the heart of North Lakes Town Centre, Pathways is a landmark community facility for the Pine Rivers district that provides residents with a common place to meet, to learn, and to play.

Designed like no other, Pathways is a $14 million centre that includes a state-of-the-art library, a leisure centre, a high-tech employment and skills centre, community living areas and meeting rooms. But its value to the community goes far beyond bricks and mortar.

History

The master-planned community of North Lakes began in 2000 and as part of this development, two hectares of land in the proposed Town Centre was assigned for the development of a community centre. Council and the developer saw this as an opportunity to build a centre of distinction to set a new benchmark for community facilities across the country.

It was envisaged that it would be a leading edge facility with a distinct focus on learning and leisure. It was to become the nerve centre of the community.

In June 2001 the Hornery Institute, a leading not-for-profit community development and training organisation joined forces with Council and the developer to formulate the concept, design and operating model for this ground-breaking facility.

Extensive consultation was then carried out with key stakeholders to determine the needs of North Lakes’ emerging residential community and the ever growing shire of Pine Rivers.

Four key visions were determined for the facility:

  • Personal Wellbeing (recreation / health)
  • Knowledge & Information
  • Skills Training & Employment Opportunities
  • Community Interaction

Education Queensland soon joined the project and agreed to co-locate a state senior secondary college at the facility, enjoying joint-use of the library planned for the centre. Sport and Recreation Queensland and the State Library of Queensland both supported the vision for the complex, contributing significantly to the establishment costs of this new venture.

The Queensland Government provided $1 million to Pine Rivers Shire Council for the development of Pathways Leisure to get more Queenslanders active through sport and recreation. After a master planning exercise by Hassell Pty Ltd, Bovis Lend Lease began construction of Stage 1 in September 2003.

The innovative new facility was then officially named Pathways to represent the “journeys” it offered to users through opportunities to learn and develop.

It also reflects its appeal as a meeting place for residents to socialise and form networks. Pathways opened its doors in September 2004 and is operated by the Moreton Bay Regional Council. Stage 2 of Pathways is now open, which included the establishment of the public senior secondary college by Education Queensland.
